WEST MAPLE STREET BRIDGE REHABILITATION PROJECT
BACKGROUND
The Maple Street Bridge over the Kinnickinnic River, being a
structurally deficient bridge with a sufficiency rating less than 80, is
eligible for bridge rehabilitation funds. The City of River Falls
supports the notion of properly-timed maintenance and rehabilitation
efforts to prolong the life expectancy of bridges. Significant
delaminating of the deck was noted in 1998. Subsequent maintenance was
done by the City of River Falls to remove and patch delaminated areas.
Some of the removals were for the full depth of the deck. We anticipate
that the rehabilitation of this bridge would involve scarifying and
overlaying the bridge deck at a minimum ion addition to partial and full
depth patching. On February 25, 2004, the City was notified that
$258,400 had been approved in the 2005-2007 STP Local Bridge Program for
rehabilitation of the maple Street Bridge. PROJECT FUNDING Federal
funding will pay for 80% of the cost for this project. $258,400 has been
approved in the 2005-2007 STP Local Bridge Program for rehabilitation of
the Wasson Lane Bridge. The City of River Falls CIP for 2006 and 2007
includes proposed funding for the local 20% match.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Maple Street currently serves as a minor arterial street for the City
of River Falls and plays an important role in the local transportation
network. It is one of the main roads used to access the west side of
River Falls. The bridge is located in the heart of downtown River Falls
less than one block from Main Street. The current structure is not ADA
compliant with regards to handicap accessible walks and should be
corrected as part of the rehabilitation. Curb drop offs from the
existing walks are also severe.
We anticipate that the rehabilitation of this bridge would involve
scarifying and overlaying the bridge deck in addition to partial and
full depth deck repairs as necessary. Rehabilitation work involving the
bearings and abutments is also likely.
The proposed rehabilitation should be attractive and incorporate
aesthetic treatments to the maximum extent allowable under the STP Local
Bridge Program and within the planned budget. It is anticipated that the
bridge will be closed during rehabilitation with traffic detoured to the
Division Street Bridge.
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS
The project must be completed within the 2005-2007 STP Local Bridge
Program timeframe. The City of River Falls CIP anticipates construction
in 2007.
