Voter Registration

 

You must be registered before you can vote  (Voter registration application).   Anyone who is at least 18 years of age, is a U.S. citizen, has lived at their current address for ten days and has not lost the right to vote can register and vote.  City residents can register in person at City Hall.  To register, you will be asked to provide your Driver’s License number.  If you do not have a Driver's License, you may use the last four digits of your Social Security number.  For proof of residency, the following forms may be used:

  • A WI identification card

  • Any other official identification card or license issued by a WI governmental body or unit or by an employer in the normal course of business, but not including a business card

  • A credit card or plate

  • A library card

  • A check cashing or courtesy card issued by a merchandise  in the normal course of business

  • A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election

  • A residential lease which is effective for a period that includes election day

  • A university, college or technical institute fee card

  • A university, college or technical institute identification card

  • An airplane pilot's license

  • A gas, electric or telephone service statement for the period commencing not earlier than 90 days before the election

If you cannot supply acceptable proof of residence, your registration form can be substantiated and signed by one other elector who resides in your municipality, corroborating your residency information.  The corroborator must then provide acceptable proof of residence.

 

You can also register on election day at your voting site.  You must bring the same information and meet the same requirements for election day registration as you would for registering before the election.                                   

 

Absentee Voting

State Statutes allow anyone who is unwilling or unable to go to the polls on election day to vote by absentee ballot  (Absentee Ballot Application). Voters no longer need to give a reason when requesting an absentee ballot.  You can cast an absentee ballot in person or by mail.

 

Absentee Voting in Person

Absentee ballots can be cast prior to election day as follows.

                        When:               8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

                        Call 425-0900, Ext. 107 or 154 to make sure the ballots are available.

 

Absentee Voting by Mail

You can vote by absentee ballot by mail.  You must submit a written request containing the following information:

  • Your name

  • Your address

  • Address the absentee ballot should be mailed to

  • Your signature

Mail written request to: City of River Falls, 123 East Elm Street, River Falls, WI 54022.  Written applications must be receive by the Thursday before election day.

 

Election Inspectors

The City of River Falls is always looking for citizens to work at the polls during elections. Election Inspectors (poll workers) register new voters, answer questions, hand out and explain ballots, and work with ballot counting equipment.  The polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Election Inspectors are paid $7.50 hour.

You must vote in the ward in which you live. You must cast your ballot at the voting location for your neighborhood.  For a map, click here.

 

Anyone interested in running for City Council, should contact the Deputy City Clerk’s office at 425-0900, Ext. 107 for information on nomination papers and filing deadline.
