Help us make a map of

River Falls’ Great Places

The City of River Falls Environmental Task Force is seeking input from the River Falls community to help us create an inventory of “resource protection areas.”

The project, called River Falls’ Great Places, will create a map of natural and cultural resources in and around River Falls that reflects the experience and opinions of local citizens. Natural and heritage (cultural) resources will be the primary focus of this project, however other community resources may also be identified and considered. The map will help to quantify and describe the value that citizens place on specific community resources in and around the City and will be used to inform public discussion on a wide range of planning issues. This way, as the City continues to grow, the protection of these places can be a part of the planning process.

The Process

Gather information:

Both on its own and in partnership with other community organizations, the Environmental Task Force will hold a series of public forums open to residents of the City as well as the four surrounding townships. During these sessions information will be gathered through brainstorming and group efforts to identify places using maps and aerial photographs. The goal will be to efficiently gather the most amount of information in a one-time session. These sessions may take place at the public library, town halls, the University campus, and at meetings of various community groups that would like to contribute.

Create Interim Map:

Once this initial information gathering phase is complete, an interim map will be created. This map will synthesize the community input into a format that can be presented back to the community in a useful and understandable way. The interim map will then be presented to the public through the newspaper, a web site, the library, town halls, Kinni Days ’07, River Falls Days ’07, Parks and Rec programs, and other community focused venues. This way, the broader public can interact with the map and provide further comments and ideas. At the end of this feedback period, the additional information will be integrated into the interim map to produce a final map.

Finalize Map:

The final map will be presented to the River Falls Plan Commission for formal adoption into the City’s Comprehensive Plan. It will then be available as a planning and education tool for citizens and city decision-makers.
