Main and Maple St.

20th Century

This is the northwest corner of Main and Maple. This corner served as the location for the city jail around 1910. The Maple street bridge runs west and is located beyond the parked cars in the center of the photo. The original Maple St. Bridge was washed away in 1894. The Kinnickinnic River has not raged with flood waters since the 1930's. However, since its settlement, the city has seen the loss of more than three dams and a few bridges due to flooding.

19th Century

This is the same location as it appeared around the mid-1870's. At the right is a general store. To its left is Maple St., with a covered bridge partially obscured by the store. The Greenwood Mill is located at right-center. The Greenwood was a flour and feed mill that operated from the late 1850's until 1934. It was situated on the west bank of the "Kinni" and was powered by a sluice that ran under the building. The railroad ran along side the mill at the rear. The nearest structure that exists in its place today is the foot bridge from Main St. to the farmer's market parking lot.
