APPROVAL OF AGENDA/MINUTES MSC Kukuska/Alton to approve the minutes of July 18, 2007. Unanimous.

PUBLIC/CITIZEN COMMENTS – Stokke brought concerns to the Commission regarding the conservation of historic homes. She is concerned that college students renting the homes are destroying them and they are having parties in the houses late at night, disturbing the neighbors. She suggested that the college teach a class on respect. It was suggested that she bring her comments to the City Council.

NEW BUSINESS - None

OLD BUSINESS

1. Freeman House/Glen Park Pool – State and National Register Plaque

The Commission decided on a uniform plaque distinguishing National Register of Historic Places. It is an oval design with the name of the house/building/area, the date, and the words "National Register of Historic Places." It will be affixed to the house/building when possible.

2. Glen Park and Swinging Bridge Plaques

The Commission would like the plaques to be the same height and size as the one currently at Glen Park, near the pool house. The wording for the Glen Park sign is, "Powell’s woods was purchased by the City in 1898 in an effort to create a City park. To facilitate park picnics, the newly established Women’s Improvement League built Glen Park Lodge on May 26, 1912. This lodge was damaged by a tornado on May 10, 1953. From 1923 to the 1940’s Glen Park featured a zoo that included Billy and Betty the bears and other native animals. Swimming pool construction began in 1933 and opened in 1937." The wording for the Swinging Bridge is, "In the 1860’s the area below the Swinging Bridge was a popular site for outings. Down in the glen, several bridges were built to cross the South Fork of the Kinnickinnic River but were often washed out by floods. In 1925 the Minneapolis Bridge Company designed a suspension bridge high over the South Fork to connect Glen Park with Cascade Avenue. It was placed directly over the dam, spanning 130 feet between the supports, costing $4,800."

3. Discussion Regarding Landscaping along Junction Mill Smokestack Pathway

Lucero will look into planting grass in the area and find out who is responsible to mow the area. If it is the Utility Department's responsibility, he will need to discuss it with them before making any changes. Alton is continuing to look into having an arbor built. This will also need to be cleared with Utilities since it will be placed on their property.
