More Information about the Foundation

What is the Library Foundation?
The River Falls Library Foundation was established in the early 1990s after the Library received bequests from two estates. The Foundation's mission is "to enhance the quality of River Falls Public Library services to the community by securing resources to support library programs and projects not normally met by public funding." The Foundation also raises, manages, and distributes large donations and other sums for the long-range benefit of the River Falls Public Library.

The Foundation was instrumental in raising funds for the new building and for the completion of the lower level. However, they have other ongoing projects, such as the annual Summer Library Program for children and the Technology Program. The Foundation's continued support of the technology program has been key in helping the library to provide computer and Internet access to those who might not otherwise have it. Their funding allows the library to replace outdated computer equipment on a regular basis. This is why this library is able to maintain so many public computers, as well as providing projectors, digital cameras, and other equipment for loan. With the financial support of the Foundation, we just installed a computer management software program that will help minimize staff time in monitoring the computer room, and that may allow more people to access the computers.

The Foundation also grants funds for one-time purchases, such as our self-check machine and the reupholstering of the window seat in the children's room. Way back at the beginning, they funded our original book and puppet sets purchase. Did you know that the Foundation buys new books by bestselling authors for the library, too? Look for the Foundation sticker in the front of the book!

Currently, the Library Foundation is interested in creating an endowment fund that will support programs and exhibits at the library. What kind of programs and exhibits? Well, in the past 12 months, the library made good use of the gallery with a display by the art staff from the local schools, a World World II exhibit, the community art show, quilt show, pieces from an art and poetry workshop, the all-school art show, a historical display from the Andahazy Ballet Company, a one-man show by artist James McKahan, fishing memorabilia and art, a retrospective of Charlie Keenan's work, doll show, and a historical exhibit on logging in Western Wisconsin.

The Foundation purchased stands and mannequins for use in gallery displays, as well as the floor pedestals and all the acrylic risers that are used in the display cases. These items were used with nearly every display we've done this year. Funds for the purchase of additional lamps for the gallery were also granted.

The Foundation has sponsored the River Falls Reads event held in February and March for the past three years. This year, featured books were John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and John M. Barry's Rising Tide. A variety of programs, including films, book discussions, a presentation by a university group who worked in hurricane-devastated Mississippi, a poverty simulation, and several speakers.

The annual Summer Library Program, which has been underwritten by the Foundation for the past decade, was very successful with 649 children participating. Seven well-attended events for children were held over the course of the summer, and 5831 hours of reading were recorded by participants.

The River Falls Library Foundation is doing important work in your community. Consider joining. The annual membership fee is only $5.00. Membership forms are available in the library.
