Bech
is Back
by John Updike
This is a humorous look at an aging author, traveling
the world, meeting a great many women and discovering who he is, and
was, in the eyes of his readers and his non-readers. The
Final Addiction
Richard Conden
"...a riotous, anarchistic black comedy in which
Richard Conden mercilessly lampoons his many targets - and confirms
everything you ever suspected about politicians", from the dust
jacket of this dryly funny look at life. If you enjoy this, Tom
Robbins is an author you would also be delighted with. The
Call of the Toad
by Gunter Gras
This is another "black humor" book. The
author of the Tin Drum has written a farce on love and business.
It is a less dense satire but still a mid-European story so prepare to
work. It is worth it. Stories
to Make You Feel Better
by Bennet Cerf
Although written over 30 years ago, in this time of
fear, it is the perfect anodyne. It is a collection of very
short funny tales guaranteed to tickle your funny bone. The
humor is somewhat dated but funny is funny is funny.
James
Thurber, Ogden
Nash and E.B.
White
There are many sorts of humorous writing and the very
best, the most intelligent, the most lasting are those done by Misters
Thurber, Nash, and White. All three of them look at the human
condition with an honest eye and tell the truth. To see our
foibles shown to us with a lot of intelligence is refreshing and now,
more than ever, necessary.
Humorous
Fiction
If nothing on the above list catches your eye try the almost 1,000
