American Memory: Historical
Collections from the National Digital Library
The National Digital Library Program is an effort to digitize and deliver electronically the distinctive,
historical Americana holdings at the Library of Congress, including photographs, manuscripts, rare books,
maps, recorded sound, and moving pictures. A a gateway to rich primary
source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States.
The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical
collections.
American Folklife Center
The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress was created by Congress in 1976 "to preserve and present
American Folklife." The Center incorporates the Archive of Folk Culture, which was established at the Library in 1928 as a
repository for American Folk Music. The Center and its collections have grown to encompass all aspects of folklore and
folklife from this country and around the world.
The American Experience
Since its debut in 1988, PBS's American Experience has brought stories of the people and events that shaped
this country into nearly eight million homes each week. As television's longest-running, most-watched
history series, American Experience brings to life the incredible characters and epic stories that helped
form this nation.

Popular Culture: Online Resources

Immigration History Research Center
Founded in 1965, the Immigration History Research Center is an international resource on
American immigration and ethnic history. The IHRC collects, preserves, and makes available
archival and published resources documenting immigration and ethnicity on a national scope.
These materials are particularly rich for ethnic groups that originated in eastern, central, and
southern Europe and the Near East -- those who came to this country during the great wave of
migration that gained momentum in the 1880s and peaked in the first decades of the 20th
century.
The New Americans
Through the intimate stories of a diverse group of immigrants and refugees, The
New Americans film, Web site, and outreach campaign will capture the lives of
contemporary immigrants in all their complexities. The New Americans will put a
human face on the breadth and scope of immigrants' and refugees' experience
in America.
