The Film Encyclopedia
by Ephraim Katz
Long considered the undisputed bible of the movie industry, this book
is considered the most comprehensive one-volume encyclopedia on
film. Arranged alphabetically, this reference contains nearly
8,000 entries on the artistic, technical, and commercial aspects of
moviemaking including: directors, producers, stars, screenwriters, and
cinematographers; styles, genres, and schools of filmmaking; motion
picture studios and film centers; film-related organizations and
events; industry jargon and technical terms; and inventions,
inventors, and equipment.

The Encyclopedia of Novels into Film
by John C. Tibbetts and James M. Welsh
More than 300 entries survey film adaptations of novels with
insightful commentary and meticulous detail. Each entry provides
a profile of the novel, summarizing the plot, major characters,
important themes, and the literary significance of the work. A
second profile encapsulates the various film adaptations, examining
how the movie preserved or changed elements of the book, why the
changes occurred, how the director's or studio's version differed from
the author's, and how successful the movie was on its own merits.

The Encyclopedia of Stage Plays into Film
by John C. Tibbetts and James M. Welsh
More than 300 entries are classified into three sections: dramatic
adaptations, musical adaptations, and Shakespearean adaptations.
Each entry discusses both the play and the film in detail,
highlighting the changes made form the stage to screen, the actors and
actresses, the playwrights and screenwriters, and the critical
reception of both the play and the movie. Extensively
cross-referenced, this book also includes an extended appendix that
discusses other notable films addressing the theatre and theatrical
life without being strict adaptations from plays.

Enser's Filmed Books and Plays
compiled by Ellen Baskin and Mandy Hicken
A list of books and plays from which films have been made,
1928 - 1991, this is a valuable resource for librarians, students,
scholars and film buffs.

Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever
edited by Jim Craddock
From Library Journal - The brief entries are arranged
alphabetically by film title, and each entry includes production
information, alternate titles, brief cast, crew, and cameos data,
one-to-four (or WOOF!) bone ratings, DVD and VHS availability, and
awards. The last category is especially useful, featuring not only the
winners of and nominees for the Oscars but for the Independent Spirit
Awards, MTV Awards, and Golden Raspberries. Reviews are often humorous
but always informative. What pushes VideoHound to the front of the
pack, however, is the series of appendixes that improve access,
including alternate titles, awards, categories (ranging from
"Abortion" to "Zombies"), cast, directors,
writers, composers, cinematographers, a video source guide, and a web
site guide. Teachers will find the "kibbles and series
index" particularly handy for locating movies adapted from plays
or poems or those with a common author (e.g., Jack London).
