History of Costume

  • The Costume Society of America
"Advances the global understanding of all aspects of dress and appearance. We work to stimulate scholarship and encourage study in the rich and diverse field of costume."
  • The Dictionary of Costume
From Kent State University Museum.  A visual dictionary of fashion by Anne Bissonnette.  "Enter the world of fashion and witness the change in silhouttes, accessories, lingerie and hairstyles from the 18th to 20th century.
  • The History of Costume
"The History of Costume or Zur Geschichte der Kostüme was printed from 1861 to 1880 in Munich by the publishing firm of Braun and Schneider. It was originally published as individual plates in a German magazine titled "Münchener Bilderbogen". Later, these plates were collected and bound into book form. The total publication consisted of 125 pages, with four pictures per pages, for a total of 500 costume designs. These plates consisted of historical dress from antiquity to the end of the 19th century."  This site is a digital reproduction of the book.
  • La Couturière Parisienne
"This site is all about period costume, from the Middle Ages up to the early 20th century. Access 4000 costume pictures through a database, read one of hundreds of articles, or download some authentic period patterns."
  • The Right Chemistry: Colors in Fashion, 1704-1918
"The story told in the exhibition begins at a time when few dyers were chemists and almost all colors were extracted from living organisms, and ends at a time when dyes were synthesized in laboratories.  Unbeknownst to most, science and fashion have long been intertwined."  This online display explores the relationship between the science of color and fashion.

Food and Drug Administration.  Provides safety tips on face painting.  "Painting your face can be a big part of the fun on Halloween and lots of other special occasions.
