Grandparents |
Our grandchildren accept us for ourselves,
without rebuke or effort to change us, as no one in our entire lives
has ever done, not our parents, siblings, spouses, friends - and
hardly ever our own grown children. ~Ruth Goode
National
Grandparent's Day
"The impetus for a National Grandparents Day
originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West
Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely
elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to
tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.
President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents
Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor
Day."
National Grandparent's Day for Schools
Includes ideas and projects for teachers to make National
Grandparent's Day an interesting activity for students. "A
Note to Teachers - The purpose of this Web Quest is to offer
grandparents quality time with their grandchildren, while providing
grandchildren an opportunity to share in the history of their family.
Additionally, grandchildren are encouraged to gain new wisdom
from--and affection for--older people. The tasks were designed
so that all students can pick something at which they can be
successful using their strengths and abilities as well as their
available resources. There is also enough variety in the tasks to
allow enjoyable choices for students who do not live in close
proximity to their own grandparent."
Ten Great Activities for Grandparents Day
"One of the first holidays of the new school year,
Grandparents Day, is observed on second Sunday in September. With all
the work to be done at the start of classes, have you had an
opportunity to plan your celebration? If not, don't panic! The Web is
your source for grand ideas for Grandparents Day!"

Family Living Programs offers Grandparents University each summer.
This award-winning two-day workshop is a chance for children
(recommended ages 7-14) and their grandparents to come together and
learn from each other in a dynamic atmosphere at the UW campus. What
could be more exciting than sharing stories, reliving and creating
memories, and earning a degree together from UW-Madison?"
Grandparent Liability
"In the early 1980s, a unique group of pro-choice
and pro-life advocates met to discuss their concerns about the
increasing number of unintended pregnancies in Wisconsin, especially
among teens. As a result of those discussions, the Wisconsin State
Legislature enacted the Wisconsin Grandparent Liability Law as part of
the Abortion Prevention and Family Responsibility Act of 1985. This
law (s. 49.90 Wis. Stats) holds that grandparents are responsible for
the support of any grandchildren born to their minor teen (under age
18) sons or daughters."
