Sprawl : A Compact History

The Forgotten Fifth

Gary B. Nash relates the history of African Americans in the Revolutionary War period, a largely unknown chapter which saw America's largest slave rebellion and an exodus of Blacks who fled servitude to fight for the British--promised their freedom in exchange for military service. This included slaves belonging to George Washington and the other Founding Fathers. Nash argues that abolitionist sentiment was widespread in the Revolutionary period and that the nascent United States missed a unique opportunity to dismantle slavery, a moral failure ultimately leading to the tragedy of the Civil War.

The Long Tail : Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More

Drawing on several recent examples in the world of e-commerce--primarily movies, books, and music--Chris Anderson of Wired magazine presents his case that the Internet has made possible a new world in which the combined value of modest sellers and niche items equals the sales of the top hits, and how this market fragmentation and unlimited consumer choice offers huge new opportunities for businesses.
